When Making Selections
Media specialists work cooperatively with administrators and teachers to provide resources which promote the overall educational program. Students are also encouraged to request materials. Library media collections are developed to meet both curricular and personal needs of the whole school community. To ensure that these needs are met, library media specialists apply selection criteria and use recommended selection tools.
Procedure
Three professional reviews should be considered for each book. Books should meet a curricular or personal patron need based on school level. Content should be age-appropriate. Books of literary merit with questionable content should be read by the librarian or a designated staff member to determine placement in the library.
Requests generated by students, parents, staff, administration, and community members must follow same procedure as librarian-selected material. A valid student-based curricular need or patron need should be established before consideration of purchasing requested materials.
